Medication against High Blood Pressure

There are several different types of medications that you can take for high blood pressure.

Beta blockers

The first medication is the beta blockers. They are given to a person who is suffering from high blood pressure because they can reduce the heart rate, the workload of the heat, and output of the blood that goes to the heart. Therefore, a person’s blood pressure will become lower.

Diuretics

The second medication is the diuretics. This is something that a person can take in order to get rid of the excess sodium or salt and water in their body. When this happens, the person will have a better ability to control their blood pressure. They are going to work even better if they are taken with the combination of other medications.

ACE inhibitors

The third medication is the ACE inhibitors. This is when the patient is going to be given angiotensin, which is a chemical that can cause a person’s arteries to become narrow throughout the body. This is going to be especially true in the kidneys. ACE is also known as angiotensin converting enzyme. This means that the body is going to produce less of the antiotensin. Therefore, the blood vessels will have the ability to relax and open up so that the blood pressure can be lower.

Angiotensin II receptor blockers

The fourth medication is the Angiotensin II receptor blockers. These are the drugs that are given to the patient to help to block the effects of angiotensin. It will need the receptor to fit into or bind with. This helps to constrict the blood vessels. The blockers will block the receptors so the angiotensin will not constrict the blood vessel. When the blood vessels have the ability to stay open, then a person’s will see that their blood pressure will be reduced.

Calcium channel blockers

The fifth medication is the calcium channel blockers. This means that the calcium is not going to be able to enter into the smooth muscle cells of the heart and the arteries. If the calcium has the ability to enter into the cells, then they will become stronger and it will be harder for them to contract. Therefore, when the calcium decreases, then the heart will not have to contract as hard or with as much force. The blood vessels that might be more narrow because of the high blood pressure are going to be able to relax so a person’s heart rates will be reduced and it can lower their blood pressure.

Alpha 2 receptor agonists

The sixth medication is alpha 2 receptor agonists. Basically, a person will be able to reduce their blood pressure by decreasing the activities of the sympathetic portion of the involuntary nervous system. This is one of the main reasons why a lot of pregnant women are going to be given them. They don’t have a lot of the side effects on the woman or the baby when the baby is in the development process.

Combo

The seventh medication is a combination of the alpha and beta blockers. Most of the time, this is going to be given to a person is the form of an IV because the person is going to be experiencing a hypertensive crisis. In other words, the person’s blood pressure is going to rise very quickly so they are going to become very sick. But they can be prescribed to a patient out of the hospital if they are at risk of heart failure because of their high blood pressure.

Peripheral adrenergic inhibitors

The eighth medication is the Peripheral adrenergic inhibitors. They can reduce a person’s blood pressure by blocking the neurotransmitters inside of a person’s brain. This means that the smooth muscles in the brain will not be able to get the message that they need to constrict. These are drugs that most doctors are not going to use unless the other types of medications have not been working for the patient. This is because they are going to have a lot more side effects that some of the other medications. This is something that you don’t want to deal with on top of trying to control your high blood pressure.
