My Blood Pressure is 71/53 - good or bad?
Each scale rates one number on its own; the higher category counts. Blue = low (systolic under 90 or diastolic under 60) — a common label, not an AHA/ACC category.
Measure again — don't just dismiss it
If the low reading is confirmed, or if you have any symptoms such as dizziness, fainting or confusion, contact a doctor promptly — the same day.
What this reading tells you
This reading is clearly below the usual range — lower than the harmless low readings many fit people have. It can be a measuring error, but it should not simply be dismissed: measure again, and follow the box above if it is confirmed or you have symptoms.
Know your numbers
The average pressure that keeps your organs supplied — diastolic plus one third of the gap. Low: below 65, the organs can be under-supplied — measure again and follow the guidance for low readings above.
Narrow. A gap under 25 is often a measuring error — take the reading again. If it stays this narrow, discuss it with your doctor.
Questions to ask your doctor
- Could any of my medicines be lowering my blood pressure?
- Should we check my blood pressure lying down and standing up?
- Do my symptoms (if any) need tests such as an ECG or blood count?
Your 7-day home check
One reading can mislead. Measure twice each morning (before medication and coffee) and evening for a week, skip day 1, and average the rest. Print this log or copy it. How to measure: How to Check Your Blood Pressure at Home.
