The renal system is responsible for several different processes throughout the body. In addition to assisting the body to dispose of waste through urine, the kidneys play a role in regulating hormones, controlling blood pressure and are largely responsible for maintaining the balance of minerals such as potassium and sodium. Dietary Requirements
As with any other type of diet, a well-balanced diet is an important part of maintaining kidney health. This includes consumption a wide variety of food that is rich in vitamins, minerals and other substances which are good for the body. Restrictions or Limitations

In some cases, protein may also be decreased and fluid intake my be restricted to a certain daily amount. The DASH Diet
The DASH diet is a common diet to promote kidney health and may help slow the progression of kidney disease or decrease symptoms in some individuals. DASH stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension. This diet is not just for those with kidney disease, but may be prescribed to treat various health issues. Similar to the previously mentioned dietary recommendations, DASH seeks to lower sodium while incorporating healthy options into the diet. It focuses on low fat, low sugar and a reduction in red meats.
Important Considerations
Dietary changes are a great way to decrease blood pressure, maintain optimal health and may be necessary for those who may suffer from kidney disease. While these tips are suitable for most people, those who suffer from chronic kidney disease, (CKD), should always follow the advice of their physician and consult them before making any type of changes. Depending on the level of CKD and other factors, there may be more or less restrictions or variations needed in the diet.
